The way it works is you make a free account, called a Soundcloud profile. In essence it is a music sharing, streaming and downloading website. There are two ways to use Soundcloud. One way is to take or upload your own audio recordings and share them with the world. The second way is to look for other people's audio tracks and download or listen to them. Other people can search for your profile by name, or you can follow other people. When you follow someone, any new songs or tracks they post on Soundcloud will show up on your home feed. You can make a song private so only people with the direct link can see it. You can also make it public so everyone can see it. You can also share the song on other websites such as Facebook or Twitter. There are two types of songs: tracks and sets. Songs are like regular songs. Mixes or 'sets' are when a DJ puts together several songs to make a longer song.

Tags are keywords that people can search for on Soundcloud, such as "Edm" or "Trance". You can add up to five tags to your song. Some tags are more popular than others. For example, if you listen to a lot of dubstep then you might want to add the tag "Dubstep" or "Dub". But if you also listen to Drum and Bass, you might want to add the tag "DnB" or "Dnb". Why? Because people searching for one thing might also like something else. For example, someone looking for Dubstep might also like Drum and Bass. That's why it's a good idea to use some popular tags, but also tags that are specific to your music. Other tips: Use ALL the characters allowed. Don't over-tag (Add too many tags to a song). Add words that people might use to search for your kind of music.

A soundcloud tag is something that describes your track in 20 characters or less. It is used by listeners and DJs to find tracks of a similar style to the one they are looking for. A tag should be a short word or phrase describing your music. It could be what language your tracks are in, like Spanish, or a genre, like Dubstep. Tags can also be a combination of genres, like Dubstep/DnB or Dance/House. It is important to choose a tag that best describes your music.
What are popular soundcloud tags?
The first tags to choose are the most prominent ones in your music. The most common tags which are usually present in every track are Dance, Electronic, House, Pop and Beat. These words can almost always be used to describe any track. If you are unsure of what other tags to use, add these first. The next tags to use are the Genre tags. Genre tags are a little different as these describe not only the track, but also the Genre the track belongs to. Genre tags commonly used on Soundcloud are:
Breaks
Drum n Bass
Dubstep
House
Indie
Metal
Pop
Rap
Rock
If your music doesn't distinctly fit into any of these genres, do not use the tag. Soundcloud has a system in place where if you tag a track to a certain genre and the track gets popular, more tracks with the same Genre tag are shown to you. This means if you incorrectly add a Genre tag, you will not be shown any more tracks from that genre, potentially narrowing the amount of tracks you are shown and missing out on new music. If in doubt, do not add a genre tag. The final tags to use are the intangible ones. These tags describe your track in an abstract way. Some common tags for this are:
Bass
Chill
Dance
Dream
Emotional
Melody
Piano
Sad
Summer
Visualisation
Choose your favourite 3 tags out of the list above to tag your track with. This is only a guideline though, you do not have to follow it exactly. Choose whatever tags best describe your track and be as descriptive as possible!
How do you add hashtags to soundcloud?
Soundcloud has a built in system for adding hashtags to your track.
Go to the Soundcloud page of the track you wish to add a hashtag to. For this example we will use the page for your remix.
In the description box paste in the hashtag you want to add. For this example we will use #viral.
After pasting the hashtag press enter once and add a space after the hashtag.
Hold Ctrl and click on the hashtag you have just added. Doing this will highlight the hashtag and spaces.
Using your arrow keys, move the hashtag and space block all the way to the right of the description box.
Go to "Edit" and then "Add Page Attributes". Ignore "Add New Attribute" and click "update page". The hashtag will now be displayed on your track page.
